Divorce and you: 4 excellent reasons

On Behalf of | Mar 26, 2019 | Divorce |

Divorce is far more common and accepted in American society today compared to a few generations ago, but some people still struggle with the idea of ending their marriage. Is it the right thing to do? Are their reasons actually valid? Are they making the right choice?

While it is up to you to answer all of those questions for yourself, based on your specific situation, it is also important to remember that there are definitely valid reasons to call it quits on your marriage. Here are four excellent ones:

  1. Your spouse is financially abusive or causing you serious economic harm. It’s more than just disagreeing about how you spend your money. Financial issues are often about control and often can be classified as abuse.
  2. Your spouse engages in emotional or physical abuse. These are more common than financial abuse, but all three could be involved. With physical abuse in particular, if you are in danger, you need to know what legal options you have to keep yourself safe.
  3. Your spouse is involved in another relationship. You took a vow when you got married, but that does not mean your spouse will honor it. Infidelity remains a leading cause of divorce.
  4. Your spouse is addicted to alcohol or other drugs. This addiction can have a massive financial strain, but it may also put you and the kids in very real danger. Again, you need to focus on protecting yourself and staying safe, even if that means the end of your marriage.

Are you facing any of these issues in your own relationship? If so, be sure you look into your legal rights and what steps to take if you want a divorce.
