Why is it risky to get married early?

On Behalf of | Aug 15, 2019 | Divorce |

Have you ever heard people say that you don’t want to get married too young or that you should never get married before you get done with college? Maybe you’ve wondered why it matters; if you already found the right person for you, isn’t that the only thing you really need to worry about?

There are a lot of potential issues that come along with getting married young, and there is a reason that it leads to divorce so often. Some possible issues include financial stress and rushing into marriage for the wrong reasons.

You also want to consider exactly how you may change in the coming years and what that means for your relationship. Just because it feels like a perfect fit today does not mean it will feel like one in a few years; when you’re young, you may still have a lot of changing and developing to do.

For instance, one man said that he married the girl that he dated in high school. However, just 12 months after tying the knot, he became a “new-age hippie” and she became “a soccer mom”. At that age, they just couldn’t know how college and other experiences would change them. The relationship that worked in high school fizzled out and they wound up getting a divorce.

This does not mean that these marriages never work out, but it is important to understand why they have such a high divorce rate and exactly what that may mean for your future. If you do end up getting divorced, you also want to make sure you know what legal steps to take.
